The high barrel roll is a continuous movement between two poses: front bird and star. The transitional pose is the reverse inside star, but the flyer doesn’t fully enter it—just passes through it briefly.

This is also a beautiful high barrel roll… Daniel Scott

Used transitions

Similar washing machines

In the barrel roll washing machine, the flyer rotates while the base stays low, stepping around on their hips. In the high barrel roll, however, the base actually steps up into the star pose—this is where the name comes from.

Many people confuse the high barrel roll and the corkscrew washing machines. The transition itself looks very similar, but the key difference is in the flyer’s shape: in the corkscrew, the flyer stays in a straddle pike, with the legs perpendicular to the body, while in the high barrel roll, the flyer also opens into a straddle but keeps a straight body line without piking.
