From Bird on Hands to High flying Whale

329

This is a fundamental and elegant transition, commonly used in beginner-level flows.
The movement begins with the flyer bringing their legs forward into a wide straddle, while simultaneously reaching their upper body first upward, then gradually arching backward. It’s important for the flyer to maintain a straight, slightly backbending line throughout the motion, which helps create a feeling of openness and stability.

Meanwhile, the base threads their legs between the flyer’s and moves them behind the flyer’s back. The flyer is first seated gently onto the base’s shins, allowing both partners to stabilize in this intermediate position. From here, the base takes hold of the flyer’s ankles and places the soles of their feet under the flyer’s shoulder blades. With a controlled leg extension, this action lifts the flyer into whale pose.

This transition emphasizes coordination and body awareness, making it an excellent element for beginners to practice alignment, timing, and trust.

Transitional pose

This transition can be done in two separate steps, which makes it accessible even for beginners.
First, pause in a pike cross pose, then move through a cross pose to arrive in whale.
We demonstrate both transitions—give them a try and practice this sequence too!

This video clearly shows the full transition:
starting from bird in hands, moving into pike cross, then through cross, and finally arriving in whale.

Watch closely and try it step by step in your own practice!
