From Straddle Throne to Bird – Step and Pop

408

There are two ways to transition from Straddle throne to Bird: with a step or with a pop.
It’s best to first learn the beginner-friendly step version. Once that feels solid, you can try the pop variation. We illustrate both options here.

Used poses

Transition pose with legs unlocked but not extended (extension not required) (only for the pop version)

Flyer leans forward and takes the base’s hand. She unlocks one of her legs and stretches it backwards. The base enters the flyer’s hips. Then they do the same with the other leg.

First, the flyer places their hands into the base’s hands and shifts their weight forward. Then, they unhook their legs—it’s more elegant if the legs are extended, but it’s not absolutely necessary; the key is that they are unhooked.

Next, the base bends their legs slightly to generate momentum and pops the flyer’s hips upward. Using this lift, the flyer swings their legs back and brings them together. This allows them to transition smoothly into bird pose, landing gently on the base’s feet.

At the moment of landing, the base softens the catch by bending their legs slightly, making the arrival feel smooth and cushioned.
